Have you ever heard of six word memoirs? I was unfortunately out of the loop until my last English professor asked us to introduce ourselves in the online classroom forum with a six word memoir. It was so interesting to see what each student came up with in the class, and what the professor herself said.
What is a Six Word Memoir?
It’s a memoir, in six words. According to legend, Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in six words and his response? “For Sale: Baby shoes. Never worn.” So, in January of 2006, Smith Magazine created The Six Word Memoir Project. They challenged their creative readers to tell their own stories in six words, and have since published a lot of the ones they’ve received. I don’t know about you, but I LOVE this whole idea-and I think I’ll even get the books so I can read the six word memoirs of strangers. So fascinating!
Watch this YouTube video for a really great explanation of six word memoirs, and some wonderful examples:
My Six Word Memoir
When the professor challenged us to write our six word memoir, I found it to be quite the difficult task. I went over a lot of different options and eventually I submitted one that I could safely say was a memoir of sorts.
“I am not just this body”
Choosing “I am not this body” was a statement. When you grow up as an overweight girl in a world where physical beauty is set to impossible standards and where lack of conformity is ridiculed and looked down on, I had to really find a place for myself outside of my body, and even after doing so the physical followed me around. I learned what about my body was best to draw attention to, and what was not, and how to use my body to my advantage when it came to dating. Not being about my body took on a whole new meaning when I had to learn to find men who didn’t just want me for what my body could do. Goodness, I still haven’t gotten that figured out or him found yet, but I know better how to accept and give love, and what I should deserve. That is why this statement was important to me.
My February Sponsors and Their Six Word Memoirs
Since I found this challenge to be difficult and so rewarding, I decided to present it to the lovely bloggers who are hanging out on my sidebar (or at the bottom of my posts) this month. I wanted to see what they’d come up with when presented with the challenge, and then I wanted to turn around and these sponsors with my readers in a fun and unique way. Thus, I’m sharing with you their six word memoirs, and a little bit more. I hope you enjoy.
Aside from their six word memoirs, I also asked them to each tell me their main goal this year and how they plan to accomplish it, as well as what their favorite post they’ve ever posted on their blog was, and why. I hope you find a new bloggy bff today!
“Fueled by love, laughter, and coffee.”
Katy from Plays Well With Coffee
Goal: My major goal is to get a new car – but I’ve already mostly completed that game plan by paying off my debt. So, my next major goal? Take a road trip out west in that new car with my boyfriend and our Great Dane. Yep. He goes everywhere with us! We just need a car big enough for all three of us and luggage to be able to go far! SOON! (And, I’m saving up now before we get the new car, so that I don’t have to worry about road trip money!!)
Favorite Post: I’m gonna go with my “Looking Back on 2015” post. It was really awesome to recap my year and set goals at the same time. Looking forward to the rest of 2016!!!
“Fiercely independent memory making mama bear”
Stephanie from Wife Mommy Me
Goal: I’ve been working on having a healthier lifestyle. Eating better and moving more. My goal is to simply take it one day at a time, make good decisions and give it my all. I have a number on the scale I’d love to see but to keep things in perspective, I tell myself that if I was to lose just half a pound a week, in a single year, I’d be 27 pounds lighter. That’s a whole lot weight I’d love to say adios to.
Favorite Post: I’m nearly at the 1,000 publish post mark so this is a tough question. But if I had to pick one, I would say it is when I detailed my experience and feelings on finding my confidence as a mother.
“Indoorsy girl learning to love outdoors.”
Esther from Local Adventurer
Goal: We’re moving again this year, so I’d love to finish off our ultimate San Diego bucket list and then start putting together our next bucket list for our next city.
Favorite Post: My favorite post is an old one, but it’s my packing guide for the 4 Day Inca Trail Hike to Machu Picchu. It wasn’t my favorite one to write, but it has become my favorite over time because I’ve heard the most feedback on it. It was nice to know that those who were planning to do this hike were actually using this and found it helpful.
“Happiness only lies within the heart.”
Ashley from Simply Ashley Nicole
Goal: I want to include more products in my shop this year. I have just opened my own shop on my blog and will be filling it up with prints, greeting cards, invitations, and more. I would love to do custom work also. I plan to work hard each month to get at least two new products in the shop. If you have any suggestions of products, I would love to hear them. Just shoot me an email.
Favorite Post: I don’t know which one to choose!!! I love lots of my posts. Here is a recent post that I really enjoyed writing… Over Exhaustion and How to Cope
“Painted canvas a thousand layers deep.”
Kimi from Kimi Who
Goal: My biggest goal for 2016 is to not only move into our first house, but really make it ours. I’m expecting this to be an all year sort of challenge for us because let’s face it – I don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars to just buy every piece of furniture and decor I could possibly want. Honestly, I’m okay with that. I thought for a while that it would upset me to move into a empty house. But after while, I realized that I will have plenty of time to choose wisely and select pieces that really speak of who my boyfriend and I are as a couple. The plan is to take it all one piece at a time and work together to make our new house our home.
Favorite Post: Okay, so I have a lot of posts of mine that I am partial to… but I recently realized that I’ve never shared with my readers how I met Jeremy, the love of my life. It’s actually a funny story with a great twist – as if it’s something out of a romantic comedy. I finally got around to sharing it in this post and it was a lot of fun for me to get the chance to tell my readers.
“Life is what you make it.”
Christina from Curvy Diaries
Goal: One goal I plan to complete in 2016 is to travel more. I’ve always wanted to travel more and this year I do have some exciting trips planned. I’ll be heading to New York in March and later this year, I’ll be heading to Europe. I’m super excited about that. The best part? Spending time with family and friends while on these trips and exploring new places with them!
Favorite Post: I have two blogs, but my favorite post on Curvy Diaries would have to be “Stores I Wish Sold Plus Size Clothing“. I wish stores would cater to a wider group of women (and men) who are plus size. The average woman is a size 14, which is considered plus size so why aren’t more stores catering to that? I hope they do in the future!
“Unusual beginnings with a happy ending.”
Alexis from Chemistry Cachet
Goal: Finish creating my ebook & research for my academic consulting business. Game plan includes working on it everyday, and start connecting with all clients, past and present, to find out what they liked most from my consulting. I love coaching people into being awesome, successful college students, even in the hard classes like sciences and maths.
Favorite Post: I would have to say my post on my Journey to Becoming the Best Blogger I Can Be. This post started out as just a list of things of courses and classes I have taken as a blogger to learn more, and it quickly transformed into this soul bearing post about why I REALLY started to blog and the roadblocks that have been put in my path, and how all this led to Chemistry Cachet. It is a special post to me and I love it!
