Something I don’t enjoy about buying gifts for kids is the fact that so many of them follow such strict gender norms which is never good for children. Sure, there are gifts like the karaoke microphones on BFP that are perfect for either gender, but there are also soldiers and blue toys marketed only for boys and Barbie dolls or ponies that are marketed towards girls. Plus notice how “toys for girls” are always things like dolls and pink fluffy unicorns whereas “toys for boys” are monster trucks and wrestling toys. What type of message is that for our kids? There are times when I look at this big crazy world and I’m afraid for my daughter. It’s awfully hard to be a girl in this world, and often times I wonder how I can help prepare her for the battle she’ll have to fight every day of her life. The best I can do is teach her how to be a strong, independent, feminist girl. In teaching her this, I can also give her powerful role models and tools to help prepare her. So today, I’m sharing with you some awesome feminist toys for raising strong girls, and also boys-because that’s how we roll around here. Boys can be strong and feminist and support their female friends/sisters/colleagues/etc. too.
Feminist Toys for Strong Girls (& Boys)
Each of these toys show that women can be strong, independent, and that they can achieve anything they put their minds to. They’re powerful teaching tools to teach children about the amazing feminist women who’ve changed the world for the better. They open up discussion, and allow children to have positive role models that are greater than average.
Fantastic Feminist Dolls
Many little girls and boys will enjoy playing with dolls, why not provide them something a little different than the norm? Grab them a fierce feminist doll, and teach them about the woman or story behind that doll. They can carry their role model with them as they go…
