For a lot of people, they think of their bedroom as a cozy haven where they relax at night. But you might be surprised to know that there could be more going on in your bedroom than you think. Pests like bed bugs, fleas, and dust mites could be in your room without you having a clue, and they could end up leaving you waking up itching and coughing in the night. To ensure this doesn’t happen, here are some easy ways to ensure your bedroom is a clean and healthy environment.
Clean & Healthy Bedroom Tips
Don’t Leave Piles of Clothes Sitting Around
It’s easy after a long day to put your clothes on the side of the bed or on the floor. You think you will deal with it in the morning. But then over the week the pile grows of clothes. And you will be more at risk of pests like dust mites and bed bugs if you have these. Therefore, when you do finally sort the clothes out, you will end up with irritated skin, or shrieking as you shake a spider off (trust me, I’ve been there). To make sure this doesn’t happen, always sort your clothes out before heading to bed. Put clothes that need washing straight into the laundry, and then everything else back in the closet. As mentioned before, picking up on a daily basis will make the pile feel less of a mountain to climb.
Always Vacuum Under the Bed
Another thing you should regularly do in your bedroom to keep bugs away is vacuum and remove any dust and dirt before creepy crawlies arrive. If your bedroom is left messy, you may face challenges like ants and dust mites before long. Always give the room a good hoover on a weekly basis, and never forget places like under the bed which is a haven for bugs! So many people forget this area, but it’s so important to give this area a good vacuum too.
Clean the Sheets at High Temperatures
It’s easy to end up leaving the sheets on your bed for a few weeks before giving them a clean. But if you do this, you might potentially be asking yourself do you have bed bugs? After all, they might be hiding in your sheets. To ensure this doesn’t occur, you need to make sure that you wash your sheets regularly. Moreover, you need to wash them at a high temperature to ensure any creepy crawlies like bed bugs or mites are removed quickly and effectively. That way, your bedroom can stay a clean and healthy environment.
Remove Pet Hair Immediately
A lot of people let their furry friends share the bed with us, not me-that’s the one place I don’t allow pet hair… But many people do, because having a cuddle with your beloved pet can make the bed feel even cozier. If you are sharing the bed with your pet, you need to make sure you are removing any pet hair immediately the next day. After all, your pet might have fleas living in their fur (hopefully not though…), and you will end up scratching away if this gets passed on to you. Therefore, you should be careful to keep up with your pet’s regular flea treatment and give the bedroom a good clean if you want your favorite pet with you at night.
Even without flees, they have extra dirt and oils, and their little shed hairs can be pretty irritating if it gets all over you-or worse-in your eyeball. Just make sure to give the bed a good dust or vacuum, or even take a lint roller to it.
Replace Your Mattress
Another great tip is to remember to replace the mattress after a period of time. After all, pests like dust mites and bed bugs could be hiding in the old mattress! They say every 8 years, but I think it can likely go longer if you’re careful about keeping it clean and protected over the years. Use your best discretion.
